Charity sector expertise

Scott-Moncrieff has had a successful charities practice for 25 years and is established as Scotland’s leading not-for-profit adviser. Our specialists have a wide-ranging and comprehensive knowledge of the issues facing the sector and are recognised as experts in their field. Many of our staff themselves serve as trustees on charity boards.

This understanding of charities gives us unparalleled insight into how we as advisers, auditors and accountants can improve performance, make savings and create efficiencies for our clients.

We are advisers to over a quarter of Scotland’s top 100 charities, more than any other charity audit firm. Most of these have complex operational models, VAT challenges and significant capital programmes.

At a strategic level partners have been involved with the Scottish Charity Law Review Commission, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) Charities Committee and the Auditing Practices Board Charities Audit Working Group.

Our involvement inthe production of best practice guidance for charity auditors means thatwe have embedded this best practice into our automated auditapproach for charities.

Independent schools

Whilst independent schools often face many of the same business pressures as commercial entities, their legal status and the nature of their governance present different risks therefore a different approach is required. We act for a number of independent schools of varying sizes across Scotland. As a member firm of Moore Stephens International, which acts for over 60 independent schools or academies throughout the UK, we have a specialist schools division which enables effective knowledge transfer throughout the firm.
