The judges of the E250 awards - Mary Campbell, Managing Director, Blas Ltd, Alasdair Northrup, Business Insider editor, Vivien Kyles, Chief Executive Hamilton Park Racecourse, Gio Benedetti, Chairman, Wallace Cameron, John Anderson, Chief Executive, Entrepreneurial Exchange and Murray Cromar, Client Management Director Aon – which are organised by Business Insider and Scott-Moncrieff, with Heriot Watt providing business research and company interviews support, ran their rule over a wide variety of company nominations before deciding on the eventual winners.

The winner of the Most Focused E250 Business Award was precision metal engineering company, Wallace McDowell. The judges said the Ayrshire business, whose products include football goalposts, had set out a very clear vision and objectives for the business, stuck to it and was now reaping the rewards.

Professional law firm, Harper MacLeod, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, picked up the award for Best E250 Employer. “Their very different model and low staff turnover rate” impressed the judges. PR firm, The Big Partnership, led by Alex Barr and Neil Gibson also picked up a special commendation on the evening for their progressive employee policies and talent management strategies.

The E250 Award for Innovation was picked up by Bruichladdich Distillery. The company was set up by Mark Reynier in 2001 to acquire the whisky stock and assets of the distillery which was then mothballed and owned by Jim Bean Brands. Over a period of time the distillery undertook their own labelling and bottling as well as persuading local farmers to grow barley again to supply the distillery.

In a relatively short time the distillery has acquired a unique brand identity and now supplies 45 whiskies and, although as an independently owned distillery its market share is still relatively small, it achieved a 28.3% increase in turnover in 2007 which is substantially in excess of the average for the industry. The judges said Mark Reynier has shown both courage and innovation in building a new whisky business in a highly
competitive market. Gordon Armour, Chairman of Scott-Moncrieff summed up the success of Bruichladdich by describing the distiller as “Islay from barrel to bottle”.

“Authenticity is paramount at the premium end of the whisky market. Without significant distribution or marketing muscle, integrity, originality, traceability, quality and variety are the essential ingredients of Bruichladdich’s success story”.

Fastest Growing E250 Company was awarded to Indigo Vision. The Edinburgh based digital surveillance firm has almost doubled sales and tripled operating profits over the past 12 months. Best E250 Newcomer was Intense a Glasgow University spin out company.

The awards which are open to the 250 best performing Scottish businesses with turnover between £5m to £15m recognise exceptional business achievement were presented at a glittering awards ceremony in Glasgow’s Radisson Hotel on Wednesday 29th October.
