Museums and galleries tax relief: what’s the latest?

Following a recent statement by HM Treasury, there is a chance the museums and galleries tax relief legislation will be introduced later this year.

On Thursday 13 July, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury released a written ministerial statement confirming the Government’s intention to introduce a Finance Bill shortly after the summer recess. This is set to contain provisions previously withdrawn before the election, including the museums and galleries tax relief.

Any policies that have been announced as applying from before the introduction of the forthcoming Finance Bill are unaffected, with the previous dates of application being retained. In the case of the museums and galleries tax relief, this means the relief will apply to expenditure incurred from 1 April 2017. You can find the full ministerial statement here.

You can also read our factsheet on the museums and galleries tax relief here, which provides a summary of the relief, outlining who can make a claim and what costs can be included.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about this relief, please do not hesitate to contact Kirsty Murray or Catriona Macleod on 0131 473 3500.
