Glasgow Society of the Sons and Daughters of Ministers of the Church of Scotland

This Society was incorporated by Charter or Seal of Cause granted by the Magistrates of Glasgow in 1791.

The principal objectives of the Society are:

  • To give financial assistance to such children of deceased Ministers of the Church of Scotland and shall require and be deserving of it.
  • To grant financial assistance to such children of Ministers of the Church of Scotland as shall require and be deserving of it to meet the costs of attending university or postgraduate training with preference to those children who are training for the ministry or mission work of the Church of Scotland.


Funds available

£40,000 is available for distribution during the year. Last year 12 children of deceased Ministers were supported, each receiving between £1,350 and £2,950. Thirty grants were made in connection with university students ranging from £300 to £500 per annum. Three grants were also made out of a separate fund in connection with applications which fell outwith the criteria indicated above but were nevertheless for educational purposes.

Applications from children of deceased Ministers (whatever age) may apply at any time by downloading the application form, completing it and sending it to the Secretary & Treasurer – contact details below.

Applications for grants for university students should download the appropriate form, complete it and return it to the Secretary & Treasurer. Applications should be sent in no later than 31 May each year and grants are distributed by early September.

This Society co-operates with the Society for the Benefit of Sons and Daughters of the Clergy of the Church of Scotland and the Esdaile Trust in the distribution of grants for the benefit of students.
